My name is Jeremy Decker, and I am a self admitted athlete turned science nerd...and proud of it. I graduated from Elsie Allen High in Santa Rosa in 1998. I then took a long walk through three different colleges trying to figure out what I wanted to do in this world. While playing basketball at one of these colleges, a knee injury forced me into making a decision on a major. I chose Biology, with the idea of becoming a veterinarian. However, after working at a Wildlife Preserve called Safari West, I decided to become a teacher. I found that I really enjoyed teaching people about animal biology...and I was pretty good at it. I felt that my teaching style reached many different kinds of people, with many different learning styles...and this would be very beneficial in a classroom setting.
Students learn in many different ways. Because of the diversity of individual thought, teachers should pursue a multi-faceted approach when educating young minds. It is important to engage students in lively discussions that in turn make the material relevant to their lives outside of school. My curriculum implementation will allow for students from every cognitive level to be successful because it will rely on minimal lecture and maximum involvement. An old adage states: "Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand." My primary focus is to involve students; not only to promote lifelong learning among my students but to help them to see the importance of a sound education. My classroom management philosophy is to have respect for yourself and others around you. I try hard to create an environment in which most students don’t experience class room anxiety because I believe that a relaxed student has an enhanced ability to comprehend the material that is being taught.
